Overview
The occupational hazards of group stage tennis typically lead to by this stage of the season-ending championships viewers are commonly puzzled, scrambling about for a computing device and striving to determine the brain-busting qualification scenarios. But today's game between Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, thankfully, is easy. It's a direct elimination: the winner secures a semi-final matchup against Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the loser heads out.
Zverev is the favourite for this: the world No 3 is the more experienced competitor, has been the champion at this event on two prior occasions and leads their head-to-head 6-3, winning both the games they've played on an enclosed hard court.
However … this particular court on which Auger-Aliassime has claimed the majority of his titles, he is in great form after his compelling comeback against Ben Shelton on recently and he took out Zverev in the US Championships third round in August. Furthermore, conditions are faster in Turin than at the US Open venue, which is even more beneficial in the Canadian's favor.
If Zverev holds back, like he was against Sinner, and the Canadian presses the German with his powerful serves and bold strategy, it might very well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the one-time phenom who was earlier slated before the Spanish and Italian stars to take over from the Big Three – who secures the uncertain distinction of competing with the world No 1 tomorrow.
Play begins: at approximately 8:30 PM in Turin, 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time.
