"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: I also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. A host of famous admirers have publicly coveted the honor.

It's clear something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos frequently feature them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Award Nod

The band have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project emerged from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes track departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound confidence required a new sound – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global fan base.

However the band will forever be their primary focus.

"We have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
