The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
