Much like bad weather hit the northern region the night before, City swept United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three-nil triumph for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their leadership claims as they reinforced their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Losses for Manchester United

This scoreline signalled back-to-back WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, putting them a significant margin off the top team with their championship aspirations severely dented.

United’s ability to balance domestic and continental soccer with a limited roster has been a widely debated subject since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the fixture list, it always seemed this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this capability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they looked fatigued all game, the historic win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a a few changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all provided vigor, although the dropping of the in-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

The hosts, in opposition, have fewer fitness worries. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

The trouble started to accumulate for the United boss and his squad from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the power from Manchester City whose potent attack manipulated and dismantled the opposition with a sublime first half display that saw them score three goals in under half an hour.

This put the hosts in a commanding position and saw the visitors disorganized. Before this match, United had conceded just a handful in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the face of the hosts' offensive ingenuity.

Opening Threats

The warning signs came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot off target. Hemp was at the heart of everything in the beginning, exploiting the space left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right flank. Her passes were causing problems and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.

United had a number of forays ahead, their direct style giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not trouble Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, commanded possession, teasing their opposition and trying to pull them out of their organization.

Triple Strike

They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was directed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th header of the season.

They added to their lead with two more goals just before the half-time. When Rose was allowed to maraud through the midfield from defense, the pitch widened for the hosts. The key Kerstin Casparij collected the pass on the right before providing a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to tap home. A short time later, they had a third after a swift turnover in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the opportunity to strike a shot home from range.

Second Half

The clearest adjustment came from the United manager at the break as Melvine Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- City player Jess Park came most likely to score, rattling the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to produce a solitary shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have added to their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to defeat any side who placed above them the previous campaign, City's side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a strong situation after the opening fixtures.
