Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the memories of the villain Henry. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" has them relive a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that could contain the secret to his downfall once and for all.
Heads Up: This discussion reveals crucial plot points for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the world called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a fight for life.
In keeping with mysteries this season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and Secret Science
This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. The man in the cavern is that employee.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is known about Brenner's work, the case almost certainly contained samples of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was possessed by the entity in an earlier season.
The Power of Fear
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory demonstrates how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to gain strength.
Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
