The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and pledged to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse limits the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the very day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the end of September but not the start of October, since funding expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.
